"The focus of my photography over the years and what's really driven me to learn and improve how I shoot has been wildfires. I started working in wildfire in Montana in 2004 and took a disposable camera with me on my first fire assignment to Alaska. As I progressed in my career as a wildland firefighter and started slowly upgrading my camera gear, I started realizing I wanted to be able to better capture what we got to see on fires. In 2010 I was hired by the Wyoming Hotshots, where I'm still at today. Seeing the increased fire activity that hotshot crews do only made me want to increase my ability so in 2013 I made the switch to a dslr and began the process of learning about photography rather than just pointing and shooting."

"Skipping ahead to the present I'm a captain with the Wyoming Hotshots and still carry my camera in my line gear for those slower moments. I'm often asked how I have time to shoot any pictures. The media makes fire out to be a sort of chaotic battle and when a fire is just starting and is in what's called the initial attack phase, it is organized chaos and all the focus is on catching the fire. Hotshot crews spend most of their time on fires that have been lost during initial attack. Typically hotshot crews are ordered to the large fires which due to the scale have to be approached more as a marathon than an initial attack sprint. Oftentimes we've got good control of where we're working and we're just putting in the work to secure it. A good example is late night burns with good winds. When the relative humidity comes up and we have good winds, meaning blowing back into the fire, the risk of our burns escaping drop way down and there's typically time to pull the camera out for a minute as shots present themselves."
